Golf in
recent years has become a favorite hobby of mine. Golf is a game were you’re
never completely happy. You can have the best round of your life and still be
upset by the two three putts you had for bogeys on holes seven, and hole nine. I’ve
unfortunately only golfed consistently for the past two years when time
permits, it has blossomed as a form of competition between my close group of
friends and we’ve all generally just started to take the game seriously. It also
is the best excuse to get outside and enjoyed being in nature, some of the most
beautiful places I’ve seen in Minnesota happened to have been golf courses.
Despite the recent interest in golf by my close group of friends and myself,
the sport’s popularity is steadily declining.
According
to an article in the New York Times golf has lost around five million players in
the last decade, with around twenty five million more to quit in the next few
years due to age (baby boomers). Professionals have been endlessly trying to
stop the decline by researching and experimenting with new rules, and different
forms of the game. This is in a big attempt to attract the thirty and under
crowd to get them reinvested in the sport.
I’ve
recently become very interested in this issue, mostly because I just discovered
this problem early this summer. The New York Times article which link I’ll post
below really delves more in depth about what attempts have been made to slow the
decline and get youths back interested into the game again.

Okay, it's official: if anyone's ever going to get me interested in golf, it's going to be you and this blog. Using the NYT article was really smart here, as it got my attention and established the credibility of your point.
ReplyDeleteOne writing tip: you switch "person" between your second and third sentences (from "you" to "I"). In general, if you can avoid "you" in your writing, it will be stronger and more polished feeling!
Very interesting blog post, I personally don't play golf so I had no idea it was on decline but regardless your blog post was both informative and interesting to even someone who doesn't know much about that game. Overall nice job.
ReplyDelete"Golf is a game were you’re never completely happy." So true, my grandparents always get me to go and it's so frustrating. I liked how you spoke about the decline of game play, even though I don't particularly like golf, it was interesting information to have. The way this blog is set up, you can tell your passion for it.
ReplyDeleteNice post. I like everyone else, don't have much of an intrest in golf. I did like how this article talks about your passion and also draws peoples awareness to the decline in golf. I had no idea the sport was loosing so many players. I spent about 4 years working in a retirement community that revolved around golf and I still know next to nothing about it!
ReplyDeleteI honestly had no idea that golf was in the decline because I live right next to a golf course and my high school team has been flourishing. I personally don't golf, but I know that it brings many people together. Each year my church puts on a golf tournament/potluck. It is nice to see so many different age groups playing together. Hopefully golf takes off again and gains popularity.
